QUINTA DA URZE
Quinta da Urze is located above the
Ribeira d'Aguiar where, opposite to the crags,
there are the remains of a once important Roman
quarry. This is where the rare mountain eagle
(Águia Real) has its nesting sites. The property
covers 190 hectares of schist and poor soil.

The vines are planted at an average
height of 320 metres, facing east and thus
protected from the worst climatic excesses of this
inhospitable region. The 14 hectares of Touriga
Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta
Barroca, and Tinta Amarela varietals
produce elegant and aromatic wines. Small handful
of clones from famous international varietals are
also planted.
Olive trees from the Madural
e Negrinha varietals cover an area of
roughly 107 hectares and are indigenous to the
region. The majority age around one hundred years
old.
In
the old houses of the Quinta, from the middle of
the 19th Century, you can find one of the oldest
CARM's winelodges. The granite open tops allow a
single fermentation of 40 tons.
The juices were conducted by gravity,
through channels drawn in the stone, to the old
"barrels" where the brandy was added to
stop the fermentation.
Nowadays, these open tops are not
used due to the Quinta's location.
